Inklines knitwear is now available to pre-order

This collection of five pieces was designed by Niela in response to the Northern Isles’ distant past and the idea of deep time.

Pre-ordering is a new way to purchase Inklines knitwear from our online boutique. These garments are already in production. We prioritise your chosen piece and dispatch it within eight weeks of your order.

How pre-ordering works

  • Choose your piece online from the Inklines collection and complete your order as normal.
  • Your garment is added to our priority list.
  • Our in-house linking team makes up your Inklines knit from its individually knitted panels.
  • We finish your piece of knitwear, washing, pressing and sewing in the label by hand.
  • After carefully wrapping it, we dispatch your garment – within eight weeks of your order.

Please note

  • Knitwear available to pre-order is already in production and is now at the point where it can be made up into finished garments. The full process of knitwear production is significantly longer than the eight week pre-order schedule.
  • Pre-ordering is currently only available for items in the Inklines collection.

Linear motif and easy asymmetry

Irregular pattern or garment shape is a feature of the five pieces in the Inklines collection.

There are also several longer-line styles (by popular demand!).

Colours available include beautiful combinations in monochrome plus a sunny yellow. All are knitted in soft, extra-fine merino.

Scroll on for an introduction to the knits of Inklines.

Inklines long squint cape in midnight.

We think the long squint cape is a bit of a hidden gem.

This shape is unique amongst the capes of Nielanell and we love seeing how it suits different wearers.

It is also a great example of Niela's approach to knitwear construction.

When flat, the shape of the long squint cape is really interesting.

Drawing on her Indian heritage – and garments worn by members of her family – Niela often uses apparently simple shapes to give unexpected drape.

The Inklines jacket has a longer line than our other jackets and its shaped lapels can be worn open or closed for two very different looks.

Depending on the colourway chosen, the Inklines pattern itself becomes more or less of a statement.

The straighter shape of the Inklines tunic also provides a wonderful canvas for the linear motif.

And, because each panel is designed and knitted individually, there is still some interesting asymmetry within the pattern.

It wouldn't be a Nielanell collection without one of Niela's signature, shorter capes!

If you're a fan of these very versatile and easy Nielanell pieces, the Inklines cape will be a familiar, classic poncho shape.

An inked timeline

DESIGN NOTES

After a visit to the archaeological dig at Ness of Brodgar in Orkney (where a pre-historic settlement was excavated over twenty years), Niela began to investigate how she might represent this long history of human habitation... in knit.

Simple linear marks found on stone at Brodgar were a particular source of inspiration.

Thinking beyond the specific neolithic context, she drew an inked timeline that stretched into 'deep time' – before human life – and layers of rock.

The overlapping, linear motifs of the Inklines knitwear collection grew from these beginnings.

In the Northern Isles, we are never far from ancient structures and artefacts made by generations of Shetlanders and Orcadians – and we are surrounded by evidence of geological deep time.
