We often welcome groups to the studio, and can provide a short introduction to Nielanell and our unusual knitwear collections, a behind-the-scenes tour, or even a hands-on workshop.
Nielanell is conveniently located in Hoswick, in the South Mainland of Shetland, between Lerwick and Sumburgh Airport (20 minutes drive from each).
Covid-19
The studio shop is open to groups
We have a Covid-safe plan in place, and visits to the studio are being conducted in accordance with this.
Behind-the-scenes tours & workshops
At the moment (summer 2021) we cannot offer behind-the-scenes tours or workshops, but would be delighted to discuss your plans for the future: please get in touch.
Visiting the studio with a tour group
If you are bringing a tour group to Shetland and would like to visit the Nielanell studio shop, please get in touch to make an appointment. We will welcome your group to the studio shop with an informal introduction to our knitwear, design philosophy, and life as a Shetland textile designer. We find that visitors with no previous knowledge of knitting or textiles very much enjoy their time at the studio.
Life in a Scottish knitwear studio: we often welcome visitors on Shetland knitting holidays, or general interest groups on a trip to the Islands.
Special interest tours for art and textile groups
If you are bringing a group to Shetland with a particular focus on textiles, we can organise a longer tour of our studios and shop. These are often combined with a hands-on workshop (see below). We regularly welcome groups which are in Shetland as part of a knitting holiday. We are currently taking bookings for next year and beyond—please get in touch.
Textile and design workshops
Niela Nell Kalra is an experienced teacher in design, dyeing and spinning. We can offer your group a class tailored to their skill level and the time available. Popular classes include handpainting sock blanks and Niela’s class in design methods. We can also devise a programme to suit you, including instruction from other local craftspeople.
Niela also teaches during Shetland Wool Week, where she co-curates the programme in Hoswick.
