An exhibition at Stove Kirk

Friday Jul 04, 2025

Outside the knitwear studio, members of our team have many interests. Katie Leask is an artist – as well as being Katie of Nielanell.

Katie was delighted when local illustrator Gilly Bridle invited her to take part in a group exhibition at the former Stove Kirk, Sandwick, which is now Gilly's studio.

Katie's paintings (scroll to see a couple) will be shown alongside pieces by Nina Price, Jordan Clark, Maiwenn Beadle and Fionn Arnett.

Exhibition opening, 7 July

All are welcome at the opening on Monday 7 July (4-7pm). Thereafter, the show will be open daily, 10am-4pm, until 27 July.

Conveniently, the kirk is around 10 minutes walk from Hoswick and the Nielanell knitwear studio. The kirk is also very near the bus stop from Sumburgh/Lerwick.

The old kirk at Stove

On her illustrator's blog, Gilly writes about how she and her husband – sailmaker and mender Davie Meddes of Sew Far North – came to transform the old kirk in this part of Shetland's South Mainland.

Paintings by Katie Leask

Katie works mostly in oil. She is interested in preserving moments that might otherwise be easily overlooked, or rushed past in the busyness of life.

Hoswick is not just the location of her work at Nielanell. The village is also home to her family life – and the subject of many of her paintings.
