Shetland Wool Week 2018: What's on at Nielanell

As ever, Hoswick is a buzz of activity during Shetland Wool Week (22nd-30th September 2018).

Come and soak up the atmosphere in our beautiful coastal village: Hoswick is only a 20 minute drive from Lerwick (there are also regular buses).

Events at Nielanell

Open studio, behind the scenes tour, exhibition

Niela Kalra and her team are hosting an open studio at Nielanell - open 09.00-17.30, daily during Shetland Wool Week. Drop into the studio, on the main street in Hoswick, and help us celebrate our tenth birthday with a glass of something...

Niela is also holding a daily 'Meet the Designer' event at 13.00, which includes a behind the scenes tour. In addition, Niela also has a special exhibition of knit and glass in one of the village's oldest buildings!

Hoswick Visitor Centre & Cafe

Open 9.30am-5pm daily (closed Sun 30th for private event)

Our village's wonderful Visitor Centre & Cafe is open daily. Along with the local history exhibitions (the HVC was previously the Hoswick Weaving Shed) you'll find a special display for SWW18 - Niela Kalra's collection of spinning wheels, which come from all over the world. 

Craft shop

On sale at HVC during SWW are local crafts, knitwear and knitting pattern kits by Elizabeth Johnston 

Drop-in

10am-5pm daily (except Sun 30th): as well as the scheduled classes, there is a drop-in area free to use, with a textile library. Shetland knitters and spinners will be in residence during the week - Elizabeth is on duty on Monday, Wed and Fri mornings. 

HVC is also the venue for workshops and classes programmed by this year's Shetland Wool Week Patron - Elizabeth Johnston. 

Laurence Odie Knitwear

Just a few doors down from Nielanell, find Laurence Odie Knitwear - one of Shetland's knitwear manufacturers. Find hand and machine knitted pieces at amazing prices! Open Mon-Fri, 9am-5pm.

2018 is Nielanell's tenth birthday. Drop into the studio and enjoy a glass of something and learn a bit more about Niela's work, and life as a Shetland textile designer. The studio is bursting with colour, texture, our latest collections, and even some handspun yarn and beautiful handknitted pieces by friends, family and local makers. 

Find the studio on Hoswick's main street. There is parking available nearby - carry on towards the visitor centre.

An informal tour of Niela’s studio and workshops. We chat about the challenges and benefits of designing and making, and of having an art practice in a small rural Shetland community.

NB This is intended to be an informal: you are invited to drop into or leave it at any time, especially if you need to get to a class at the Hoswick Visitor Centre.

Bound by the Land, freed by the Sea

Exhibition

In this exhibition in knit and glass, artist Niela Kalra interprets the landmark court case arising out of the the Hoswick Whale Caa, 1888. In this installation which is located within an old crofthouse in Hoswick, Niela explores themes of equity through the lens of her previous experience as a lawyer.

NB The exhibition is housed in one of Hoswick's oldest buildings, which is nearby the Nielanell studio - come in for directions.
